Anita Holford carried out research which included face to face and telephone interviews with 'youth music leaders and developers' (from the Youth Service to music leaders to promoters); desk and online research; two group discussions with young people; an online survey; informal online conversations with young musicians; a promotions campaign.
The emerging themes included the need for: more and wider opportunities for music making and associated skills development; development of the workforce of existing and potential music leaders including those with genre-specific skills, and wider skill (entrepreneurship, social enterprise, music business, music leading); spaces for performing/recording/rehearsing; improved information and networking.
Following the publication of the report in March 2008, Gloucestershire Music commissioned further research to extend the study - including interviews and desk research in Cheltenham and Newent, and two county-wide online surveys for young musicians and music leaders. This second report was published in April 2009.
