Gongs behind bars

Convincing prisons that artistic experiences for prisoners are justifiable means talking their language. A recent gamelan project has shown that the more willing arts workers are to be uncompromising about the way they communicate the social objectives of their work, the more likely they are to be taken seriously. But, as Anita Holford finds out, this doesn't mean compromising artistic quality.
